Jacksonboro resident Pam Wiley is slated to give a presentation during the South Carolina Music Educators Association (SCMEA) State Convention in Columbia this Saturday.
Wiley’s topic will be “How to Incorporate American Music into School Music Programs.”
As part of her presentation, Wiley will conduct an orchestra of participating music teachers in orchestral arrangements of American folk and fiddle tunes and explain how they can be used to motivate students and enhance technical progress on their instruments.
Wiley conducts The Jacksonboro Fiddle Club, a free after-school program in Colleton County. The program teaches children to play music from their cultural heritage.
Gar Linder of Smoaks is heading up a major fund-raising effort to support this program and establish a scholarship fund for sending Colleton County string students to a week-long summer music camp.
The fundraiser, the “Freedom Fest Banquet,” will be held at the Walterboro Elks Lodge on March 5.
