Lori Beard of Walterboro has been named the Most Valuable Gamecock Club President by the Gamecock Club in Columbia. The award was presented during halftime at the Kentucky basketball game on Saturday Feb. 13.
“This award is being presented to you due to your passion, effort and work to spread the ‘Gamecock Gospel’ in Colleton County,” said Gamecock Club director Patrick McFarland.
Always an avid Gamecock fan, Beard got involved with the local group after moving here in 2006 and has been president since 2008.
“We try to have a good number of events,” she said. “And the money we raise goes to different things for student athletes in Columbia — not just football. We have given to the golf team and projects at the USC stadium.”
The group continues to have the annual pep rally before the Clemson-Carolina game, gets together to watch away games and have an annual football kickoff party. They also recently added a fundraising golf tournament. “We try to keep the Gamecock presence in Walterboro,” Beard said. Club members also provide a good outlet for those who want to buy or sell tickets to Gamecock events. And new fans are always welcome.
“I am honored,” Beard said, “but this award would not have happened without my board members here in Colleton County. Tiger Martin, Brantley Strickland and Gene Varn have been great to work with. We have worked hard to put Colleton County on the map in Columbia. I appreciate all the Gamecock fans who always show up at our events to show their support and look forward to the upcoming season with our new coach.”
