A Walterboro man was killed the afternoon of Feb. 19 in a one vehicle accident in the northbound lanes of I-95.
Colleton County Coroner Richard Harvey reports that John G. Walling, 53, of 694 Buffalo Lane, Walterboro was pronounced dead at the scene. He has listed the cause of death as multiple trauma.
Walling had been had been a passenger in the Jeep Cherokee driven by Carolyn Hippenstiel, 25, of Round O.
According to the accident report filed by the South Carolina Highway Patrol, Hippenstiel had been driving in the northbound lanes of I-95 Feb. 19 at approximately 5:40 p.m. when her vehicle went off the roadway and into the median.
The vehicle reportedly rolled over five times before entering the wooded area and striking tree.
Both Hippenstiel and Walling had been trapped inside the heavily damaged vehicle and had to be extricated by firefighter-paramedics with Colleton County Fire-Rescue.
Hippenstiel was transported to the heliport at the Colleton Medical Center and then flown to the Trauma Center at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.
The accident remains under investigation.
